This
beachside community has hosted visitors for more than 150 years as a
spot for picnicking, fishing, sailing and swimming.
Tybee Island offers several miles of unspoiled sands, tempting
seafood and gracious accommodations.
Tybee
(pronounced Tie-bee), a word in the Euchee Indian language, means,
"salt." Washed for centuries by the warm waters of the
Atlantic, Tybee Island is located about 15 miles east of historic
Savannah, Georgia; at the end of an eight-mile peninsula and US
Highway 80. Tybee Island is surrounded by tidal marsh, the Savannah
River, and the Atlantic Ocean. Tybee Island's warm sandy beach
stretches for miles around most of the island. Quiet and
unpretentious; Tybee's cats still sleep on Back River streets and
green herons nest in backyard palm trees.
Come
and explore the island's newest addition, the Tybee Pier and
Pavilion, located on the strand between 15th and Tybrisa
streets. Tybee Island's history is reflected by the
lighthouse, constructed in 1739. The structure, which stands
today is 154 feet high. Tybrisa street, Tybee's main business
district with park, attracts visitors with unique shops, art
galleries and outstanding cuisine of all varieties is offered in
Tybee's many restaurants. Numerous historic attractions on or near
the island range from Ft. Pulaski National Monument to the famous
Savannah Historic District, located west of Tybee Island.
